Before the World was Big
(originally titled Lightning 16)
A few years ago, I tried to reconnect with my family around Christmas and New Years. I flew from Tucson to St. Louis. I slept on the couches of old friends and reconnected with people I had not seen in a long time. I was sick of living in Tucson, and it felt good to return back to a place I called home for a long time. It rained a lot while I was there, and since I didn't have a car, I walked pretty much everywhere. I went down to a bar I used to go to in college one night, and I drank a cheap beer out on the patio because it was one of the few places people could still smoke inside, and I felt like I couldn't breathe. Two people were talking at the same bench I was sitting at, and for some reason one of them mentioned their birthday, which was also my birthday. I showed them my ID, and we exchanged high fives. It felt like things meant something, even if I didn't know what, at a point in my life when I felt very stuck. A year later, my family and I were at odds with each other again, and looking back it felt like a waste. But I'm glad I tried, and now I know that I'm better off without my family in my life.
These songs reflect going back to a place I used to call home to try to find a part of myself I lost.
